Located in North Road.
The swearing of The Horns was often performed here.It is a custom started in the C18 to encourage travellers’ patronage. It was quite light-hearted involving the swearing of oaths to drink strong beer, etc. and general merriment and debauchery.
There were nineteen pubs in Highgate that carried this out in mid C19.
The ceremony is still carried out although “the horns” is now evident as a pair of antlers!
Built around 1547 is possibly Highgate’s oldest existing pub.
Its name possibly originates from the fact that many fights were settled here in the olden days!
