WEST HILL ~

Highgate West Hill is at the far end of South Grove and at the GateHouse, represents the highest point in Highgate (430 feet above sea level).

It is the second highest point in London, the highest being Jack Straw's Castle in Hampstead (440 feet).

West Hill commands some excellent views of Hampstead and continues down into Parliament Hill Fields, by Hampstead Heath.

There are interesting houses and the area near South Grove is extremely steep.

Near the top, at No. 47, is Apothecary House, named after the occupation of one William Wetherell, who occupied it in 1788.

The shops opposite Apothecary House formed a dispensary and on the corner the old Highgate Police Station.
