KENWOOD > AREAS

South Wood (known as Ken Wood) is that area of The Heath that is within the south-east portion of the Kenwood Estate .

There are a number of interlinked winding paths, which can be reached from West Field Gate, Hampstead Gate, Chubb Gate and Highgate Gate in the south or from behind The Wood Pond and Stone Bridge or the Thousand Pound Pond in its north side.

(see the City-Of_London Map to establish its exact whereabouts)

South Wood and its paths can be seen in the map opposite.

Within these paths are interesting areas for the visitor to observe, although some are now almost hidden away and can only be accessed by organized walks from Kenwood House.

Such features are The Duelling Ground, an Ice House, a plaque describing the Great Storm of 1987.

English Nature has designated both Ken Wood and North Wood as  Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

Ken Wood also contains an area of derelict hazel coppice and has a number of invertebrates, whereas North Wood, appears to have a more impoverished invertebrate fauna.
