There is a rich variety of Fauna that inhabits The Heath.

Grass snakes, foxes, rabbits, slow worms, squirrels, terrapins and frogs are but a few.

Pipistrelles and Daubenton's Bats can be seen over the ponds.

SWAN MUSSEL ~
Thinner shelled than the marine types, these mussels are found in the Heath ponds.

They help filter the slow moving waters from the Fleet River.

MUNTJAC DEER
Heard most recently around the East Heath area.

The buck's call can be mistaken for a dog barking, although much lower and at regular two-second intervals.

Muntjac are the smallest British deer and are about the size of a large dog,with reddish-brown coat, small antlers and, in the case of males, two small tusks.


They were released into the UK from Woburn Park in the 19th Century, and are now increasingly widespread.

They are, however, generally nocturnal and solitary.
