GREEN RING-NECKED PARAKEETS

Normally, native to India.

Hampstead Heath is now home to a flock of Rose-ringed Parakeets (also known as Ring Necked Parakeets).
They tend to live at high altitudes.

Popular pets in Victorian times, it is believed that the several flocks in London may have originated from their release from the set of  "The African Queen" at Shepperton Studios in Surrey.

In the 1960s and 1970s there was a great population explosion of these wonderful birds in London!

The RSPB expect there to be 50,000 of them by 2010; they are now protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
