Charles Beck's House

CHURCH HOUSE ~
Is an eighteenth century house situated at no 10, South Grove.
It has a staircase which is probably of George I's reign.
Sir John Hawkins (d. 1789),Samuel Johnson's biographer, owned the house but never lived there, apparently.
Church House is said to have been the model for Mrs. Steerforth's residence in David Copperfield.
It was the home of Charles Beck ( 1902 to 1974), who was the creator of the original London Underground map (1933), which has kept its basic design to the present day.
